What Footballers Do in their Spare Time

There’s no denying that football is a stressful business. With higher fees and wages than ever, pressure to perform is huge, and I’m sure footballers feel the need to use their downtime to chill out, whatever their definition of ‘chill out’ is. Contrary to popular belief, footballers do work a solid working week, and don’t go and kick a ball around for an hour before spending the day doing whatever they please with their huge wages! We’ve searched the globe for some of the coolest, funniest and pure craziest hobbies and pastimes of professional footballers, and we’ve listed some of them below.

  • Gabriel Obertan – Gardening – The lightning fast winger famously used his down time during injury to get on top of his gardening. Manchester United academy director Brian McClair has been quoted as saying “New signing Gabriel Obertan is injured at the moment and can’t train and it seems he has developed a keen interest in gardening. He’s been seen helping an elderly member of the Academy staff by strimming his lawn, pruning his roses and watering his hanging baskets.” Obertan is now at Newcastle.
  • Daniel Agger – Tatto Artist – The big Danish Defender is famous for his armful of tattoos, as a lot of footballers are now, but not many can share Daniel’s unique skill of being a qualified tattoo artist with the ability to ink himself or anyone else!
  • Jody Craddock – Artist – Jody shares his talent and passion for art with a few footballers including Stephen Bywater, but Craddock is probably the best footballer-cum-artist out there, who shows his incredible skills with a range of prints available from his own website. Craddock says he got into art during school and has been practicing since as a way to unwind.
  • Golf – It’s the ultimate footballers hobby, really. Famously, Andriy Shevchenko and Carlos Tevez are certainly famous for their love of golf. Tevez has even appeared on a golf tour as a caddy for fellow Argentinian Andres Romero.
  • Fishing – A pastime famously enjoyed by the brilliant (if somewhat controversial) Chelsea defender and former England Captain John Terry.
  • Judo – Boudewijn Zenden – Before he became a footballer, Boudewijn or ‘Bolo’ Zenden picked up a black belt in Judo at the tender age of just 14.
  • Bingo – Cristiano Ronaldo (and Others) – Bingo and Online Bingo are a great way for footballers to chill out after their hard days at the training ground. Cristiano Ronaldo is a huge advocate, and loves the exciting game, he even said it helped him pick up English when he moved to the UK.

Whether it’s Inking their friends or relaxing at home on Party Bingo, professional footballers definitely have some hobbies you might not have necessarily expected!

Andy Carroll to Leave Liverpool on Loan?

Rumours are beginning to circulate more and more that Andy Carroll will leave Liverpool this summer either on loan or on a permanent deal. The former Newcastle man has been something of a flop for Liverpool since his big money move over a year ago, and though his form did begin to pick up towards the end of the Season and into the European Championship with England, new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is said to want him out of the squad.

If you believe the rumours, Carroll will head to AC Milan in the coming weeks on a year long loan deal and make way for Brendan Rodgers to impose his own playing style on the Reds. Whether he is in the long term plan on merseyside remains to be seen.

“It’s something I would have to look at, I have to be honest,” Rodgers said in a press conference, ”Andy’s always going to be linked with clubs, whether he was here or not. He knows exactly where he stands, but I have had no inquiries about him.”

“There are many things to going on loan. Is it going to be beneficial for the club, that’s the most important thing? Sometimes a player going out on loan – in general, not just Andy – can benefit the club in the long term. It gets them game experience and they come back a better player, a more confident one. Certainly more so than if they’ve been sitting on the bench for the majority of the season.”

Brendan Rodgers is certainly making his mark on the club and with his recent interviews has definitely opened the door for a Carroll move, which will undoubtedly bring the fee paid for the Geordie into the spotlight once again. Andy has played 56 games for Liverpool now and scored 11 goals, a ratio which pales into insignificance when you consider he averaged more than a goal every three games in his career at St. James’ Park.

In other Liverpool transfer news, Fabio Borini looks set to join the club from Roma. Borini and Rodgers have worked together twice in their careers at Chelsea and Swansea and will look to link up to good effect once more next season. Brendan has his work cut out at Liverpool this season, a club who always have high expectations and will be desperate to return to the pinnacle of English and European football at a time when it is more difficult and expensive than ever.

Team GB Olympic Football Squad Revealed

team_gb

After a long wait and a whole load of speculation, Stuart Pearce finally  named his Great Britain football team to take on the world at this year’s London Olympics. After it was revealed last week that David Beckham would not be playing at this summer’s games, Pearce showed that he had no room for sentimentality, and would pick his squad purely on ability (and availability of course).

The major blow to Team GB’s olympic squad is the unfortunate absence of the brilliant Gareth Bale, who would have gone to the games as one of the 15 Under 23 players in the squad. Bale was ruled out due to injury over the weekend, and will miss out on what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Pearce’s squad is made up purely of English and Welsh players after Scotland reportedly withdrew their players from selection. The tournament will be a great chance to check out some of the young talent yet to break through to the main England squad, and many of the squad could be under consideration for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and beyond.

The full Team GB Football Squad is:

JACK BUTLAND (Birmingham)
JASON STEELE (Middlesbrough)
MICAH RICHARDS (Manchester City)
CRAIG DAWSON (West Brom)
JAMES TOMKINS (West Ham)
STEVEN CAULKER (Tottenham)
RYAN BERTRAND (Chelsea)
NEIL TAYLOR (Swansea)
RYAN GIGGS (Manchester United)
AARON RAMSEY (Arsenal)
TOM CLEVERLEY (Manchester United)
JACK CORK (Southampton
DANNY ROSE (Tottenham)
JOE ALLEN (Swansea)
SCOTT SINCLAIR (Swansea)
MARVIN SORDELL (Bolton)
CRAIG BELLAMY (Liverpool)
DANIEL STURRIDGE (Chelsea)

Great Britain’s team has the luxury of a great deal of experience in spite of the age restrictions on the squad. The likes of Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge, Tom Cleverley, Aaron Ramsey and others within the GB ranks have experience of playing in the Premier League for large chunks of their fledgling careers. Players such as Sturridge and Cleverley will be extremely keen to show what they can do as they vie for a place in England’s senior team. The one player who did go to the Euros with England still to be included in the GB team is Jack Butland, who will most likely start between the sticks at the olympics.

GB will kick off their campaign with a friendly match against Brazil before playing their group fixtures against Senegal at Old Trafford, United Arab Emirates at Wembley and Uruguay at The Millenium Stadium. GB will be much fancied for finishing in the medal positions as they host the competition.

Spain Vs Italy Euro 2012 Final Preview and Kick Off Time

spain

Sixteen teams and over thirty matches in this month’s Euro 2012 Championship have all boiled down to this; the Final. Spain, many peoples favourites to win the competition before it even began, will take on an Italy side not given a cat in hell’s chance of reaching the final amidst a tough group and tough games against England and then Germany en route to the final, but Balotelli and crew are writing their own script, and go into the Final determined to cause an upset.

The Match will be played on Sunday the 1st July, and can be seen on BBC One, or listened to on BBC radio Five Live, Kick Off time is 7.45PM GMT.

Spain could continue to turn heads by opting against playing an out and out striker, it is expected that they will prefer Cesc Fabregas to Fernando Torres and try to play through the Midfield once more as Del Bosque continues with his revolutionary approach to tactics. Alvaro Negredo did start the match against Portugal as a Striker, but is not expected to keep his place in the starting XI.

Italy are faced with far more dilemmas with injury and selection, Ignazio Abate missed the Semi Final with injury, Mario Balotelli struggled with cramp and Antonio Cassano is carrying a twisted knee. All three are expected to play through the pain for the sake of their countries in what could be a once in a lifetime match for the players.

The odds truly are stacked against the Italians. Spain are unbeaten in 11 Euro matches, having won the last Championship and made it to the final in this, a new record that they will be looking to add to on Sunday evening. Dont expect a goal fest though, historically, games between the two nations are low scoring, and with the Defensive Italians not faced with a piercing centre forward I expect that the match will stay tight. Out of the last 10 meetings between the nations, seven of them have remained goalless at half time, what odds on that record being added to in this clash of the titans?

I think it’s safe to say that many of the mutuals will be rooting for the Italians in this fixture in the hope that somebody can buckle Spain’s world domination at least temporarily, with Andrea Pirlo and Mario Balotelli in the form of their careers, and having swept aside a rock solid German squad, perhaps the Italians deserve to lift the trophy come Sunday night.

Germany Vs Italy Euro 2012 Semi Final Preview Including Kick Off Time

Germany Vs Italy Euro 2012 Semi Final – Watch it on BBC One with radio coverage on BBC Radio Five Live – Match to be played at National Stadium, Warsaw – Thursday, 28 June Kick-off: 19:45 BST

The second of the semi finals for this years Euros sees England’s biggest rivals Germany come up against their conquerors in the Quarter finals, Italy.

Germany truly look like a force to be reckoned with having beaten Greece convincingly with a lot of second string squad, and look like they will shake things up again for the Semi Final. Mario Gomez, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Mueller are all available for recalls and Joachim Loew will probably return to his favourite front three. A big boost for the Germans is the fitness of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who will play in spite of an ankle injury having been declared fit. The German Midfielder said ”I am 100% fit and very much looking forward to the game. I have trained twice fully and I feel good.”

The Germans have the added advantage of two extra days rest from the quarter finals and arguably a squad with more depth anyway.

Italy will surely be jaded having played 120 minutes against England on Sunday night, and should we see extra time in this match for any reason, the Germans will be sure to have an advantage. Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele De Rossi and Ignazio Abate are all said to be struggling with injuries, though may play through pain for the sake of their countries. The two countries both bost impressive unbeaten records in competitive internationals at the moment, and it may be a case of immovable object and unstoppable force when the nations lock horns come Thursday.

Although they will presumably be favourites, the Germans have not beaten Italy in seven meetings in International competitions, the boys in Blue will certainly be hoping that this is an omen, but I truly cant look beyond Germany for this game. In six European Semi Finals, Germany have progressed five times, which is not a bad ratio. Expect them to add to that this week and head to the final on Sunday night. That said, the Italians have done extremely well to reach this stage of the competition and have Andrea Pirlo in the form of his life at 33 years of age pulling the strings in Midfield. They will certainly be no pushovers, but I expect that the Germans efficiency will do the job once again.

Portugal Vs Spain Euro 2012 Semi Final Preview Including Kick Off Time

portugal

Portugal Vs Spain Euro 2012 Semi Final -Watch it on BBC One with radio coverage on BBC Radio Five Live – Match to be played at Donbass Arena, Donetsk – Wednesday, 27 June Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Portugal coach Paolo Bento will have to change his starting line up for the Semi Final of a successful Euro 2012 campaign. The last four games his starting eleven has stayed the same, but come Wednesday he will be without the injured Helder Postiga, making way for Hugo Almeida to deputise. Vicente Del Bosque has no official injury worries, but has discussed how tired his players are in numerous press conferences so may choose to shuffle his pack with Fernando Torres pushing for a starting berth.

Perhaps surprisingly, Portugal will go into this match with the better record out of the two nations historically, and have been beaten by the Spanish only twice in the last 54 years. However, it will be tough to look beyond world champions Spain with their wealth of talent as we go into this clash between fierce rivals.

Cristiano Ronaldo will once again take centre stage, the Portugese forward of course place his club football in Spain with Madrid, and knows many of the Spanish squad well. Portugal have struggled to shake the title of one man team with Cristiano dominating proceedings on and off the field, but who would have expected anything else? One man team may be a harsh branding of a squad laced with quality, but that quality does fade into insignificance when compared to the all star cast that is the Spanish football squad. That said, the Spanish haven’t quite hit their dizzy heights yet, and nothing is predictable at this stage of a major tournament.

We expect that The Spanish will dominate come Wednesday night, and the opta stats do stack up in their favour, the Spaniards have completed twice as many passes as the Portugese in this tournament. The possession stats certainly could be embarrassing, but not as embarrassing as if the Spanish fail to capitalise, and with the pace of Nani and Ronaldo always threatening on the break, Spain will need to be switched on to live up to their credentials.

Portugal don’t have the best record in the Euros, and have lost four of the five semi finals they have reached in the competition. Spain, the reigning champions, will definitely be favourites, but dont be surprised to see a tight encounter between these two European neighbours.

England Vs Italy Preview – Euro 2012 Quarter Final Including Kick Off Time

england_italy

Sunday 24th June – England versus Italy – Venue: Olympic Stadium, Kiev Kick-off: 19:45 BST – Televised on BBC One with Highlights on ITV

This match preview is a guest post brought to you by the brilliant Matthew Broadley, you can check out his blog over at http://broadley-speaking.blogspot.co.uk/

After all the upheaval coming into the tournament, England have surprised everyone, probably including themselves with how well they done thus far. Like most of the Roy Hodgson’s teams they are very disciplined and as a result are hard to break down, Steven Gerrard is a great example of this as he is often criticised for his Roy of the Rovers style play, we have seen much more intelligent performances from him so far. This instilled discipline can be seen in the group games against France and Ukraine specifically, the majority of shots at Joe Hart’s goal were from long range, a testament to their solidity. That isn’t to say that England have been outstanding, they have struggled to retain possession, often giving the ball away sloppily, something they will need to fix as they face a strong Italian team. The return of Wayne Rooney will obviously be a boost; he will add the much needed craft to the team, something that Ashley Young largely failed to provide in the opening two games. England’s bench offers some decent impact substitutes, the pace of Walcott can trouble tired defenders, and if they need to go direct Andy Carroll has proved himself a great target man with a stunning header and decent all round display against Sweden.

Speaking of upheaval, Italy too have had their fair share with another match fixing scandal breaking in the run up to the tournament. The last time this happened in 2006 before a major tournament was the year Italy went on to lift the World Cup, if that means anything at all. Italy have been very impressive in the group games, their 3-5-2 against Spain was a particular highlight, with Daniel De Rossi outstanding in the largely defunct ‘libero’ position. The worry of that formation is perhaps the tiring of the wing backs who both have to put in a lot of work providing width when attacking, and also cover when out of possession, so it will be interesting to see how they cope. Mario Balotelli could be key to Italy’s chances, having scored a sumptuous overhead kick against Ireland his confidence should be high, with Di Natale perhaps more useful as an impact sub, we are likely to see Super Mario starting eleven once more. This game is quite hard to call, and it looks to invert the stereotypes of these two nations, expect Italy to have most of the ball and England to be the ones sitting back looking to counter attack when possible. The game will be close but I feel Italy’s greater all round quality will win out.

Predicted result: England 0-1 Italy

Spain Vs France Preview – Euro 2012 Quarter Final Including Kick Off Time

Match Odds: Spain to win 4/5. Draw after 90 Mins 5/2 and France to win 4/1. All odds brought to you from Bet 365 and accurate as of Friday 22nd June 2012.

Spain, alongside Germany, would have been most people’s pre-tournament favourites, having won the tournament four years ago and the World Cup two years ago in South Africa. They have of course played in their imitable style, dominating possession in each of their games, they do however seem to lack the penetration of years past, this could be owing to the loss of David Villa to injury, whose goal scoring record for his country is impressive to say the least. Or on the other hand teams may have begun to work out ways to frustrate them, as Italy and Croatia did for large parts of the group games. A lot has been said regarding the false nine formation they adopted against Italy, and for part of the game against Croatia, its main success seems to have been in annoying Mark Bright amongst other pundits. There is no problem with this formation on paper but Spain lack the movement upfront of someone like Alexis Sanchez who works so well in the system at Barcelona, who lest we forget often play without an out and out striker. The often maligned Fernando Torres has had a good tournament so far, and I feel it would be wise to start him against France as they will need someone with good strength on the ball to challenge the combatant centre back pairing of Rami and Mexes.

France, coming into the tournament were on an excellent run of form, free-scoring in the two friendlies that preceded the tournament. They seem to have lost that now that the pressure is really on, against England although they had the majority of possession, akin to Spain they failed to find any real penetration in the final third, relying mainly on long range efforts. Benzema, who looked a good choice to be tournament top scorer, has flattered to deceive so far, not rekindling the form he showed at Real Madrid in the season just passed. Mathieu Debuchy looks to be a decent player, especially coming forward, the game against Spain will be the sternest test yet of his defensive capabilities. Similarly the French midfield will have its work cut out; one would expect Spain to dominate possession so it will be intriguing to see how Cabaye and co cope when they do have their chances on the ball. This game I feel will be a lot close than people might expect, but the Spanish should just edge it.

Predicted result: Spain 2-1 France

Germany Vs Greece Euro 2012 Quarter Final Preview, Kick Off Time and Where You Can Watch It

germany

Friday 22nd June 19:45 – Germany versus Greece – Euro 2012 Quarter Final

Watch it on ITV One in the UK with coverage starting at 7.30 PM. Highlights on BBC1 from 10.30 PM. The match will be played at PGE Arena, Gdansk.

Match Odds: Germany to win 1/3. Draw after 90 Mins 4/1 and Greece to win 10/1. All odds brought to you from Bet 365 and accurate as of Weds 20th June 2012.

This match preview is a guest post brought to you by the brilliant Matthew Broadley, you can check out his blog over at http://broadley-speaking.blogspot.co.uk/

Greece’s qualification is perhaps the biggest surprise, what with their opener against Poland where they were to be found one nil down and with only ten men on the pitch, quite a turnaround then to see them beating group favourites Russia in the last game with a goal from captain, and now joint most capped player, Giorgos Karagounis. It is that kind of fighting spirit, akin to 2004, that they will need to show again if they are to have any chance against Germany. Starting Salpingdis would seem like a good idea given the impact he made in the Poland game, Samaras will also need to pick up his game, he has shown glimpses of his talent, but not enough as of yet. Young defender Papadopoulos has been one of the standout players, and he will need to be at his very best to handle the in form Mario Gomez.

Germany will be everyone’s favourites to progress to the semi-finals, they comfortably won their group and don’t look to have hit top gear as of yet which will be a worrying sign for the rest of the teams left in the competition. They have a stellar midfield, Bastien Schwiensteiger as ever has been excellent, and both Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil look to have grown immeasurably in their two years at Real Madrid since the World Cup. Mario Gomez has a real point to prove it seems, after the disappointment of the Champions League final, and criticism from some factions of the German press, he is in sparking form with three goals so far. Mats Hummels at centre back will have been a revelation to many viewers, comfortable on the ball, a great range of passing and great positioning being the hallmarks of his game, off the back of winning the double with Dortmund his confidence will be sky high. It is hard to see anything other than a comfortable German win in this one.

Predicted result: Germany 3-0 Greece

Czech Republic versus Portugal Preview including Kick Off Time and Where You Can See It

portugal

Thursday 21st June 19:45 – Czech Republic versus Portugal – Euro 2012 Quarter Final

Watch it on BBC One in the UK with coverage starting at 7.30 PM. Highlights on ITV1 from 10.30 PM. The match will be played at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw.

Match Odds: Czech Republic to win 9/2. Draw after 90 Mins 5/2 and Portugal to win 8/11. All odds brought to you from Bet 365 and accurate as of Weds 20th June 2012.

This match preview is a guest post brought to you by the brilliant Matthew Broadley, you can check out his blog over at http://broadley-speaking.blogspot.co.uk/

The Czech Republic should count themselves quite lucky to be going through to the quarter final stage, and even more so to be topping the group and avoiding Germany. They were torn apart by Russia in their opening game, and although they managed to beat Greece and Poland, they never looked entirely convincing doing so. Their big name players, such as Cech and Rosicky, the latter of whom is now a doubt for the quarters, have not really turned up so far, something which they will need to remedy fast if they are to go any further in the tournament. It has been Petr Jiracek who has been the standout man for them so far, with coach Bilek quoted as saying he was the ‘heart of the team’, and with two goals and some impressive performances it is easy to see why.

After a slow start losing their first game to Germany, Portugal have really picked up and look to be in good form going into the quarter finals. A spirited 3-2 victory against a decent Denmark team will obviously have done wonders for their confidence. Ronaldo’s poor performance, by his standards, in that game seems to have really spurred him on and he turned it on against Holland with a man of the match performance. Portugal are solid at the back with Pepe and Bruno Alves, and Joao Moutinho in the midfield is having a very good tournament. Ronaldo will obviously be the key man; if he is on form then Portugal should have enough to get past what is a pretty average Czech team. A great quote from Chris Mann on twitter the other day perfectly sums them up for me; “This Portugal team is very entertaining. It’s a perfect mixture of showy egomaniacs and savage nutters.”

Predicted result: Portugal 2-0 Czech Republic.
