swimmingpoolSo you want to be a swimmer? Who could blame you, swimming is an excellent way to stay in shape, it’s great fun and lets face it it is a useful skill to have for everyone. Because swimming is both aerobic and resistance training, it will work new muscles for you and is amazing for weight loss, toning up and keeping fit.

So what are the best tips to help you in your swimming training? We explore everything you need to get the most out of your time in the pool.

  • Combine your swimming workouts with the right nutrition and a good solid diet. This is key if you are going to swim competitively and will help ensure you’re not carrying extra weight around the pool and that your body is in the best condition it can be for races or competitions.
  • Correct your breathing technique. You should be exhaling slowly while your face is underwater and inhaling when you can get to the air. Failure to do so can lead to you feeling exhausted by the end of your session.
  • The right equipment. Often underestimated, you really need to be wearing the right gear before you get into swimming. Ill fitting trunks, uncomfortable swimwear and a lack of the right kit can cost you. My personal favorite place to get my swimwear is at Shark – http://www.shark-swimwear.com/
  • Get yourself up for it! Going into any swimming, especially competitive, can be a real slog if you are not feeling motivated. Make sure you are ready and raring before diving in.
