Great Britain’s Olympic Football Team

The prospect of a Great Britain team at the 2012 olympics has been met with mixed reaction. Personally, the idea of seeing some of the best young players the UK has to offer playing for an Olympic medal is truly mouth-watering. Here’s a draft of what the team could potentially look like, meeting the criteria of only three players over 23, and also considering the players who will be on duty at Euro 2012.

GK – Frankie Fielding – The young Derby stopper has found himself in the reaches of the England team and looks set to have a promising future in the game. Considering the age restrictions, Frankie is under 23 so doesn’t use up the over 23 spot someone like Wayne Hennessey (if fit) would take.

RB – Nathaniel Clyne – The Palace full-back has impressed again this season. Another youngster with a great future in the game.

CB – Chris Smalling – Depending on whether he goes to Euro 2012, Smalling has had a solid season at United and would deserve his slot in Defence.

CB – Jonny Evans – In great form for Man United, and Northern Irish so hasn’t had a sniff of a major tournament for a long time.

LB – Kieran Gibbs – Seems to have been around for a very long time now but still fits the age restrictions. A solid full back with a lot of experience.

RM – David Beckham (C) – Much discussion around this one, but will surely go having acted as ambassador for the bid. One of the over 23 players (by some distance!)

CM – Aaron Ramsey – The young arsenal Midfielder and Wales captain will bring some much needed international experience

CM – Joe Cole – Has impressed for Lille on loan this season, and wont make the Euro 2012 team. Worth a punt for team GB.

LM – Gareth Bale – First name on the team sheet. Young, experienced and not going to the Euros.

SC – Andy Carroll – Still fits the age restrictions and may well fail to make the cut for Euro 2012, though he is starting to show some form.

SC – Danny Welbeck – Depends on whether the young United striker goes to Euro 2012, but again this youngster has shown some great form and would be an asset at the Olympics.

Agree? Disagree? Who would you bring to the Olympics if you were in charge? Leave us a comment.
